Synopsis
A representative of the Polish oligarchy, corrupted by power and wealth, discovers he has a serious heart complaint. He can only be saved by an immediate transplant. He accidentally meets a young man in hospital who has lost his will to live, after becoming unemployed and suffering disappointment in love. So the potential suicide victim is a perfect donor, he just has to be helped in his passage to another life...





Director
Krzysztof Zanussi, born in Warsaw, Poland in 1939, studied Physics and Philosophy, then enrolled for the directing course at the Higher Film School of Lodz. The film he made at the end of his course established him as one of the main exponents of the new Polish cinema. He followed his debut, Struktura krysztalu (The Structure of Crystal, 1969) with, among others, Iluminacja (Illumination, 1973) winner of the Pardo d'oro and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Locarno Film Festival; Constans (The Constant Factor, 1980) winner of the Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize, a David di Donatello and the Locarno Ecumenical Jury Prize; Imperatyw (Imperative, 1982) which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. In 1984, his Rok spokojnego slonca (The year of the quiet sun) won the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion.
